http://purl.uniprot.org/proteomes/UP000000214http://www.w3.org/2000/01/rdf-schema#comment"All members of the genus Propionibacterium produce propionic acid as a major metabolic end-product; however they are divided into 2 groups, a cutaneous group (which can cause acne) and a dairy group used in cheese production. They are Gram-positive, rod-like, pleomorphic, non-spore-forming, non-motile bacteria. Propionibacterium acidipropionici ATCC 4875 was isolated from Emmenthaler cheese. It is a facultative anaerobic microorganism; however, it can grow in liquid media with oxygen added. It is able to fix CO(2), probably via the pyruvate carboxylase gene. P. acidipropionici has about 1,000 genes more than P. acnes and P. freudenreichii, suggesting less specialization and a more flexible metabolism. In addition, the high acid tolerance, wide range of substrates metabolized, hardiness and microaerophilic life style suggest that P. acidipropionici is a microorganism that has a potential use in the industrial fermentation of commodities, such as propionic acid. In addition to the annotated chromosome there is also a plasmid in this strain; it exactly matches the previously sequenced plasmid pRGO1 from P. acidipropionici and pLME106 from P. jensenii, INSDC accession AB007909, but seeing as it has not been submitted as part of this proteome it has not been added (adapted from PMID 23083487)."xsd:string
