http://purl.uniprot.org/proteomes/UP000000613http://www.w3.org/2000/01/rdf-schema#comment"Salmonella species belong to the group of Enterobactericiae. These bacteria were named after the scientist Dr. Daniel Salmon who isolated the first organism, Salmonella choleraesuis, from the intestine of a pig. The majority of the components of these bacteria are identical, and at the DNA level, they are between 95% and 99% identical. Many Salmonella enterica are involved in causing diseases of the intestine (enteric means pertaining to the intestine). The nontyphoidal Salmonella are the leading cause of bacterial food borne illness in humans, making these pathogens an immediate biomedical, public health, and biodefense concern. The presence of several pathogenicity islands (PAIs) that encode various virulence factors allows Salmonella spp. to colonize and infect host organisms. There are two important PAIs, Salmonella pathogenicity island 1 and 2 (SPI-1 and SPI-2) that encode two different type III secretion systems for the delivery of effector molecules into the host cell that result in internalization of the bacteria, which then leads to systemic spread. Salmonella enteriditis str. P125109 is a virulent phage type 4 strain."xsd:string
