It produces aerial mycelium and the color of the substrate mycelium is red-brown to yellow-brown. S. roseum utilizes glucose, arabinose, sucrose, xylose, fructose, and raffinose, but not inositol, mannose, rhamnose, or cellulose. It produces a secondary metabolite, the antibiotic angucycline WS 79089B, which is an inhibitor of the endothelin-converting enzyme. In contrast to S. carneum, S. roseum does not produce an antibiotic against Staphylococcus aureus.
