In culture it is dimorphic, growing both as thin rods (0.2-0.3 mm in diameter and 0.8-3.0 mm long) and irregular cocci (0.2-0.8 mm in diameter). In PM1 medium, M. boonei appears to be an obligate hydrogenotroph, it is unable to utilize formate, acetate, methanol, ethanol, 2-propanol, butanol or trimethylamine.
