http://purl.uniprot.org/proteomes/UP000002591http://www.w3.org/2000/01/rdf-schema#comment"The group A streptococci (GAS, Streptococcus pyogenes) are gram-positive, nonmotile, nonsporeforming coccus that occur in chains or in pairs of cells. Individual cells are round-to-ovoid cocci, 0.6-1.0 micrometer in diameter. They are catalase-negative aerotolerant anaerobe (facultative anaerobe) which require enriched medium containing blood in order to grow. Their capsule is composed of hyaluronic acid. GAS are important human pathogens which can cause a variety of diseases, ranging from mild infections to very severe invasive diseases. The M protein is a highly polymorphic cell-surface molecule that is antiphagocytic and forms the basis of a scheme commonly used to classify GAS strains. This strain of S.pyogenes is an M5 serotype isolated from a patient with acute rheumatic fever in 1952, which contains 5 prophages. Of the 12 available completely sequenced S.pyogenes genomes (February 2007), it is most closely related to the M18 serotype strain MGAS8232 (STRP8) and the M6 strain MGAS10394 (STRP6). Strain comparisons indicate that intrachromosomal recombination contributes to the divergence of S.pyogenes and of their integrated prophages."xsd:string
