http://purl.uniprot.org/proteomes/UP000002600http://www.w3.org/2000/01/rdf-schema#comment"A Gram-positive nonmotile bacterium, Streptococcus pneumoniae is the most common bacterial cause of acute respiratory infection and otitis media, and is estimated to result in over 1 millions deaths in children, the elderly, debilitated and immunosuppressed people every year. Since 1990 the number of penicillin-resistant strains has increased and many strains are now resistant to commonly prescribed antibiotics such as penicillin, macrolides and fluoroquinones."xsd:string
http://purl.uniprot.org/proteomes/UP000002600http://www.w3.org/2000/01/rdf-schema#comment"S. pneumoniae(Spain23F) sequence type 81 (ST81) was one of the first pandemic penicillin-resistant clones identified. Initially characterized in Barcelona, Spain in 1984, it spread globally, and by the late 1990s it was estimated to constitute almost 40% of penicillin-resistant disease isolates in the United States. It is highly efficient at nasal colonization. The clone is also resistant to chloramphenicol and tetracycline and is one of those most frequently associated with the emergence of fluoroquinolone and macrolide resistance. This lack of susceptibility to the major classes of antimicrobial chemotherapies used to treat pneumococcal infections has undoubtedly aided the spread of the strain. The lineage has undergone capsule switching to alternative capsule types on at least three occasions (from serotype 23F to 14, 19A, and 19F) (adapted from PubMed 19114491)."xsd:string
