http://purl.uniprot.org/proteomes/UP000006178http://www.w3.org/2000/01/rdf-schema#comment"Thermophilic anaerobic bacteria are of applied interest due to their ability to ferment components of cellulosic biomass into chemicals and fuels. Many thermophilic bacteria produce cellulose and hemicellulase enzymes, which are among the most active hydrolases known, and the ability to ferment biomass without the addition of external hydrolytic enzymes is a substantial cost advantage for the biomass conversion process. Thermoanaerobacterium saccharolyticum (strain DSM 8691 / JW/SL-YS485) is an anaerobic, thermophilic, hemicellulolytic bacterium which is a biological catalyst for the conversion of cellulosic biomass to ethanol. It grows at pH values ranging from 3.85 to 6.35 and at temperatures ranging from 30 to 66 degrees Celsius. It is able to directly ferment hemicellulose and xylan polymers, as well as primary sugars found in cellulosic biomass, including cellobiose, glucose, xylose, mannose, galactose, and arabinose, to produce ethanol. Also contains a phage THSA-485A (CP003186). (Adapted from PMID: 18779592 and http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0141022908000240 )."xsd:string
