http://purl.uniprot.org/proteomes/UP000006346http://www.w3.org/2000/01/rdf-schema#comment"The genus Desulfotomaculum, which means a sausage (shaped organism) that reduces sulfur compounds, was first described in 1965. D.orientis clusters as a phylogenetic neighbor of the genus Desulfitobacterium. Desulfosporosinus orientis (strain ATCC 19365 / DSM 765 / NCIMB 8382 / VKM B-1628) is a strictly anaerobic, chemoorganotrophic, Gram-positive bacterium. Cells are rod shaped. D. orientis is a fat curved specimen with rounded ends that measures 1.5 x 5 um. It possesses a flagella in a peritrichous arrangement, which gives D. orientis tumbling and twisting mobility. D.orientis produces a round spore that is located centrally or paracentrally. It usually causes the cell to swell slightly. Sulfur compounds act as terminal electron acceptors and are reduced to hydrogen sulfide. D. orientis does not completely oxidize the organic substrates (lactate and pyruvate), and acetate and carbon dioxide are the end products. The electron transport chain includes cytochromes of the protoheme class. D. orientis grows optimally at 30-37 degrees Celsius but can grow at 42 degrees Celsius. It requires a specialized media including reducible sulfur compounds, lactate, pyruvate, thioglycolate, and other growth factors. On this media, they produce black colonies.
