They grow as rigid, spiral-shaped, gram-negative cells that are 0.4 um wide, 5 to 7.5 um long and have five to seven spirals per cell. This strain (the type strain) was isolated from the gastric mucosa of a cat. H. felis infection in cats induces lymphoid follicular hyperplasia, mild gastritis, and seroconversion, but is associated with normal gastric secretory function.
