http://purl.uniprot.org/proteomes/UP000008987http://www.w3.org/2000/01/rdf-schema#comment"Propionibacterium acnes (strain SK137) is an anaerobic, non-spore forming, Gram-positive bacterium which is an important commensal of human skin. It has the ability to produce propionic acid, as its name suggests. Propionibacterium resembles Corynebacterium in morphology and arrangement, but is non-toxigenic. P. acnes is a common resident, normally harmless, of the pilosebaceous (hair follicle) glands of the human skin. But when it releases lipases to digest a surplus of the skin oil, sebum that has been produced, the combination of digestive products (fatty acids) and bacterial antigens stimulates an intense local inflammation that bursts the hair follicle resulting in acne vulgaris. Since acne is caused in part from an infection, it can be suppressed with topical and oral antibiotics such as clindamycin, erythromycin, or tetracycline. Some other forms of therapy include chemicals that enhance skin removal or slow the production of sebum. (Adapted from PMID: 17400737)."xsd:string
