http://purl.uniprot.org/proteomes/UP000011131http://www.w3.org/2000/01/rdf-schema#comment"Myxobacteria are gliding bacteria, and among the rare bacteria that have a multicellular developmental life cycle. In response to nutrient starvation, most myxobacteria initiate a complex developmental program, the end result of which is the formation of fruiting bodies that are filled with environmentally resistant myxospores. Fruiting body morphology is genetically determined and varies widely among myxobacterial species. Among myxobacteria, Myxococcus xanthus has emerged as a model organism to understand fruiting body formation, and most Myxococcus generate simple haystack-shaped fruiting bodies. However, M. stipitatus generates a more complex fruiting body structure in which a mass of myxospores is placed on top of a cell-free stalk. Myxobacteria are also rich sources of secondary metabolites, several of which have antibiotic or cytotoxic activities. Among secondary metabolites produced by M. stipitatus, melithiazols have been shown to have antibiotic activity and rhizopodin has been shown to have cytotoxic activity. Strain DSM14675 has been proposed as the neotype strain (adapted from PMID 23516218)."xsd:string
